You should at least use the manufacturers tool (I don't know if Maxtor has one, but most manufacturers do) to check the drive for signs of any problems. Hmm, a quick Google for "6L040J2 problems" tells me that there are other people that have had this drive fail on them, and that the test program is called maxdiag.
