I fear this might be a drive problem. You should at least use the
manufacturers tool (I don't know if Maxtor has one, but most
manufacturers do) to check the drive for signs of any problems.

Hmm, a quick Google for "6L040J2 problems" tells me that there are other
people that have had this drive fail on them, and that the test program
is called maxdiag.
