To the "formula". Since reading this, I have just routinely done this.
When making "large" jumps there has also be a lot written about making
sure you know what is happening on your system, i.e. should it be in
single-user mode..
I have been trying the new pccard stuff in 4.4 (with 0 sucess) but I have
routinely been running a 4.4 userland with a 4.2 kernel so I would not
think backing up to 4.3 would be a problem.
