Does the "rl" driver recognize the chip?  What does
"boot -v" show?

Here is what I get on my box (lines wrapped for readability):

 rl0: <RealTek 8139 10/100BaseTX> port 0xd400-0xd4ff mem \
    0xf7000000-0xf70000ff irq 5 at device 16.0 on pci0
 miibus0: <MII bus> on rl0
