You need /etc/sysconfig . It is part of the binary package and it is modified during the installation procedure. It is very hard to imagine how you could have avoided the creation of this file. I assume you have looked in the right place and also have been careful with your use of the rm command. I generally modify this file to set up user ppp, i.e. modify sendmail flags, routing, etc ...
