I know with the newer versions the preferred (in the docs for apache) 
method of stopping and starting it with the apachectl script (it's in 
apache bin dir) so running
'/usr/local/apache/bin/apachectl start' and conversely
'/usr/local/apache/bin/apachectl stop' should work.  To see all the options 
for it just type it with no options (I think though that it is just start | 
stop | restart)
