I didn't act on the suggestion for a debugging dump at the time, due to other time pressures, and now I stumble over the old bug again, and go to see what I can dig up, I find I've yet again successfully paged out my NIS knowledge. I'm not optimistic I'll be able to page that back in again in a reasonable time, so I fear I must put this problem aside. But I've said 'never again' to NIS more than once in the past....
