Oh! That must be it.

It was en_US.utf8. Not sure if that was valid at some point or if it was never
valid.

I changed it to en_US.UTF-8 and all is well. C.UTF-8 also works. I had a
different locale when I tested with x11/sterm...

I guess there's no bug here after all? I'll close it if you can confirm that.
