You could try: init 1 (takes machine into single user mode - MAKE SURE YOU'RE ON A SECURE CONSOLE!!!) and then after making any changes just issue: exit (or ^D I think, this should bring the runlevel back up to multi-user mode) As usual the manual is your friend :) man init(8) Good luck, Jez
