Hello, Freebsd-current. It is good idea to set KERNBUILDDIR when build module. But to set it you need to know ${.OBJDIR} from ${SYSDIR} and ${SYSDIR} is set in bsd.kmod.mk, which should be included last (after defining KERNBUILDDIR).
