This appears to me to be caused by an autoconf/automake problem with FreeBSD on i386. 1.) They don't link with libpthread-0.8.so. The Makefile has "@LIBPTHREAD@" instead of the correct library linking invocation, and libpthread isn't included in one of the LIBS defs later on in the Makefile. 2.)
