A while ago the Xfree86 team made the decision to spend their energy on 4.0 instead of 3.3. For a good period of time, the only things that got in 3.3 were bugfixes. 4.0 has new drivers, and for a lot of older hards, hardware acceleration and other goodies. Now that the big push to get 4.0 out the door is over, I expect they'll go back and add in support for cards they didn't have time for. I consider the XFree86 team to be the unsung heroes of Open Source. Everyone knows the names Linus Torvalds and Richard Stallman. Most folks know the names Bill Jolitz and Kirk McKusick. But no one knows the names of the XFree86 developers. They are the purest of the Open Source crowd: not for money, ideology, academia or fun - they do because it's there.
