[-- Attachment #1 --] 2.14. Any restrictions on how I divide the disk up? Yes. You must make sure that your root partition is below 1024 cylinders so the BIOS can boot the kernel from it. (Note that this is a limitation in the PC's BIOS, not FreeBSD). For a SCSI drive, this will normally imply that the root partition will be in the first 1024MB (or in the first 4096MB if extended translation is turned on - see previous question). For IDE, the corresponding figure is 504MB. this answer is vague. does the root partition need to end below 1024 cylinders also? i suspect i'll find the answer to be yes, but stating it explicitly here would clarify things. (in any case, i see that my root partition is way outside off 1024 cylinders, so this sort of answered my question anyway.) thanks for all the information! -jack [-- Attachment #2 --] <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD W3 HTML//EN"> <HTML> <HEAD> <META content=text/html;charset=iso-8859-1 http-equiv=Content-Type> <META content='"MSHTML 4.71.1712.3"' name=GENERATOR> </HEAD> <BODY bgColor=#ffffff> <DIV> <H2>2.14.
