It depends on how many RAM I give to the system. the next dmesg output is the same kernel but with MAXMEM set to 448*1024 Now the isa_dmainit goes through. The problem seems to be somewhere in the vm. isa_dmainit calls contigmalloc, which scans for a 4k page in the lower 16M memory range, but can't find any. The break is somewhere between 448 and 480 M.
