As the committer it is my responsibility to make sure that anything I commit works. I was careless, I scp(1)'d the diff to freefall whilst I was building my local copy. When that failed, I fixed it locally, created a new diff, re-built my local copy (which then worked), but forgot to scp(1) the new diff. > it's, at least partly, a grammatical disaster!
