No, I think you may have misunderstood.

People are always free to contact companies and say "hey, did you
realize you can get a free plug on the web site and, if you have
suitable advertising copy, the commercial/announce mailing lists for
FreeBSD?" - I do that all the time.  What we don't do, and all I was
trying to clarify above, is make unsolicited listings of such
companies and write their product/company description ourselves.  That
is what leads to misunderstandings (to say nothing of incorrect
product descriptions) and where we would rather have the company's
participation.
