Turns out that just doing:

# kldload if_epair

is sufficient to cause the crash.

By contrast, loading geom_uzip laods without crashing
(including loading xz).

I'd expect the same for a devel/powerpc-xtoolchain-gcc
based buildworld buildkernel that is installed and booted
but I've not tried it. (The original report was for that
context.)

devel/powerpc64-binutils is common to both types of builds
but the compilers are not.
