Unix systems are typically designed the other way around - don't
read-protect files unless they contain something that users must not
see.  Currently, FreeBSD conforms to this philosophy quite nicely, and
I hope it continues to do so.

Personally, I like being able to do as much as possible without having
to su root unless I want to modify things.  I also like being able to
see how things are set up on systems where I don't have root
privileges.
