You could also rename the old obj directory and then
run the remove command as background process:
mv /usr/obj/${.CURDIR} /usr/obj/${.CURDIR}.foobar
( rm -rf /usr/obj/${.CURDIR}.foobar; \
chflags -R noschg /usr/obj/${.CURDIR}.foobar; \
rm -rf /usr/obj/${.CURDIR}.foobar ) &
