It doesn't have any bearing on your problem, as you noted, but using
for -O2 really is asking for trouble.  The mailing list archives are
full of people who experienced really weird bugs until they stopped
using it.  I used to use -O2 myself but stopped after it got too
annoying trying to deal with all the problems.
