You probably have -link1 in your ifconfig_ep0, which forces the card to switch to the BNC tranceiver but does not actually reconfigure the card. 3Com are not particularly forthcoming with details on how do this, so if you want it to say [*BNC*] at boot time, boot with a DOS disk and run 3c5x9cfg.
