... just to follow on my previous posting; having killed myself in the
transfinite loop of trying to get DOS onto the disk so that I could 
install the Jaz software to unlock the &*$&^$&6 Jaz disk and so forth, I
put the machine aside and moved to its twin.

And lo and behold it works perfectly, as expected.  So the former has
either a screwed IDE cable, disk or motherboard, and FreeBSD works 
flawlessly (modulo the size calculation bug) with the Maxtor 5GB
disk.
