I had the same problem a few weeks ago. I made a "vipw" on the old machine, saved it to a file, ftp'ed this file to the new (freshly installed) machine, used "vipw" to get rid of the old (new) passwd and read the ftp'ed passwd-file. After ":wq" I had the old passwd file on the new machine. Maybe not the most elegant way, but worked.
