In any event, I'm stuck on another point which is that the current version of Matlab (R2006a) needs version 2.3.3 of the Gnu libraries, and the Linux emulation package in FreeBSD 6.1-RC1 comes with 2.3.2. I'll be testing 6.1-RELEASE in a week or two to see if the libraries need to be updated or not to run Matlab, and then I'll see if I can recruit a fellow FreeBSD user to test the Matlab installation procedure.
