Use the 'a' option.  It's much easier.

Okay, if it wasn't a rewind option, then the drive hit a bad tape spot and
took too long to write the block.  The drive waits 100seconds which seems
like more than enough time, but who knows.  When was the last time you
cleaned the heads on your drive?
