First, a quick re-hash: 1) could not make buildworld on 4.0-STABLE (died in objcopy.c) 2) tried 4.0-RELEASE, same thing. 3) after much flailing about, make in /usr/src would die there too, but either restarting the make, or reboot/restart would USUALLY fix it 4) eventually we got all the way thru make buildworld. Took the Shuttle HOT-591P motherboard, AMD K6-2/550, 128Meg SDRAM DIMM and the fan just purchased saturday back to vendor along with the rest of the computer, and gave them instructions on how to reproduce the failure (I thought hardware/timing/cache/whatever). After them replacing all of the above items TWICE and then going over the BIOS settings with a fine tooth comb, we now have a WORKING system. Thanks to all on the list who tried to help, and for putting up with my ramblings over the weekend. If anyone wants/needs the final BIOS settings/version/etc, please ask. Larry Rosenman PS: The vendor may start using a make buildworld as a burnin test after this (maybe even start selling FreeBSD configured boxes).
