yes you can. Indeed, I did just such a thing Sunday night on my wife's
PC - although, it was Win98 on 3G primary partition and FreeBSD3.3 on
the 1G extended partition.

My paranoia was unfounded regarding backups (did a full backup of the
data on the Win98 partiton before starting), and the FreeBSD install
proceeded smoothly thanks to Grog's excellent advice in "The Complete
FreeBSD - 3rd Edition".

I installed the base system for X-User, Linux emulation, then loaded
fvwm95 (keeping the interface similar to ease the transition) and then
loaded Corel WordPerfect 8 - and it worked first time!

WP8 is a bit slow on a P90 with 'only' 40MbRAM, but once started is
quite spritely. And having access to the Win98/FAT32 disk is "nice" too
:')
