Please check (and maybe update) the version of devel/automake.
I tested here (on 4.4-RC) with automake-1.4 and automake-1.4.5_1 without
any problems.
On my systems the file /usr/local/share/aclocal/sdl11.m4 doesn't exist, so
I think this is a problem local to your setup.
