I think __linux__ has always been defined and LINUX has never been defined
by Linux compilers.  `linux' ,__linux and __linux__ are usually defined.
LINUX isn't defined by the Nov 28 1995 version of gcc-2.7.2 on my ISP's
Linux system.  LINUX is apparently defined on the command line or in a
header for compiling the kernel.
