 |nada. I don't have enough vram for 24 bit, but trying 16 at all

I betcha do :-) I used to have a 2Meg card too. Try 800x600x24.

 |different resolutions doesn't work. And moving the window doesn't
 |have any effect. I was using 15 bit depth because that's what dtv
 |requires.

Ok.

 |Here's a clue: I retried running 'dga' (the test program) for the
 |first time since upgrading to 3.3.2. It has always only worked for me
 |at 8 bit -- not 15 or 16 -- but now it successfully causes a reboot.
 |Does dga work for others?

Tell you the truth, I'd never tried it. But here on 3.3.2p3 w/
3.0-RELEASE, here's what I get at 1600x1280x16bpp:

X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)
Major opcode of failed request: 78 (X_CreateColormap)
Serial number of failed request: 12
Current serial number in output stream: 269

Appears dga may be one of those X apps that assumes a particular type of
visual is available for its use. That reboot doesn't sound good. Wonder
if it's related to Fxtv not showing DGA output.

 |"Diamond Stealth 64 DRAM v2.09" is what the chip says.
 |
 |Anyone else using fxtv with such an S3 video card?

Hmmm. Grepping the archives, here's an interesting post:

But this still doesn't give any clue why dtv works and fxtv doesn't. Might
check the DGA calls dtv is making and note any differences. This problem
isn't ringing any bells here. Sorry.
