Since adding -DWITHOUT_GNOME worked for you, I wonder if
/usr/X11R6/bin/gnome-config exists.  If it does, all ports that
WANT_GNOME will try to build GNOME dependencies.

If you want to keep abreast of the AbiWord changes, you can always add
AbiWord to your FreshPorts watch list.
