Stop in BIOS setup (or whatever) before booting / after halt and wait and listen if the drive goes silent. Takes 15 minutes for me; YMMV. I see spindown on a second IDE drive; I guess the disk with rootfs is never idle long enough. Not a laptop or anything; a regular newish IDE drive (6G Fireball). I haven't changed any settings on the drive or anything; maybe auto-spindown is default on IDE nowadays? I haven't had crashes or anything due to spindown; spin-up just freezes FreeBSD solid for a couple of seconds (no mouse or keyboard response.) I've just sort of supposed it is mostly harmless... ++sja To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-current" in the body of the message
