This is Gnome-specific: I don't know about the desktop-- I use launchers in the Gnome panel for this. Right-click on the panel, then Panel>Add to Panel>Launcher... I the new app has created a menu entry you can use "Launcher from menu..." instead of "Launcher..." chris.
