OK, guess I just got about half of the conversation (I came into this one late.) Can't help you much, but if you have problems under other OS's, you might want to just buy a new card. Funny, the same thing happened to me with an SB Ensoniq card. Installing xmixer and remaking /dev/snd0, then running xmixer seemed to fix it (no, I can't explain it either, but it worked.)
