I don't actually know.  Firmware, I expect.

Also, the CP model has an integrated floppy controller.  I don't think
that the other sub-models of the 1542 have that.

What can I say?  Mine doesn't, and it appears that I'm not the only person
to have reported this specific kernel bug.

P.S.  I think that somebody should think about maybe taking the 1542 off
of the `supported hardware' list, as it really ain't supported at the
present time.  Not by recent kernels anyway.
