Just this weekend, I installed SlackWare in an effort to get around the problems I've had with the outdated linux_devel port. I downloaded x11amp and tried it on both FBSD and Slackware. I had the same problems you describe on FBSD, but it worked without a hitch on SlackWare. Just so ya know...
