I just went through this last week on a Linux machine, First check the SANE site for supported scanners: http://www.mostang.com/sane/sane-backends.html We ended up with an Epson Perfection 1660 which worked fine once I figured out how to specify color in xsane. This wasn't the Latest & Greatest from Epson, and we had to buy the floor sample from CompUSA since the current 1670 wasn't listed. I first tried a new HP scanner figuring that most of the HP scanners were supported by one driver, and I've been using one of their SCSI/USB scanners with automatic document feeder for a couple of years. Unfortunately SANE didn't recognize it, and HP's support was less than helpful to the point I won't consider using them in the future. My experience with scanners and CUPS printing leads me to believe that Epson inkjets and scanners are probably the best supported by the open source software.
