This may or may not be of relevance... For a while during the 2.2-x-SNAP period I tried to run with a readonly /usr, and change it to read/write with mount -u when I needed to update it. I often ended up with a corrupted file system, and sometimes with a panic. Fortunately, fsck was able to fix the problems. (I quit trying to use a readonly /usr because of these problems.)
