FreeBSD runs just fine on the sv24. Recently Shuttle introduced a 
successor (sv25), that is capable of running the tualatins, too.

That's the least wanted feature; yes.

How many PCI-slots does the FICO box have?

The SV24/25 has one additional PCI-Slot. I popped in a DLINK 570-TX
(Quad Port LAN) quiet easily. It runs as my internet-gateway system
without a hassle during the last few months. BTW, it's a nice idea to 
cut the voltage for the fans from 12 to 7V.
