United Way should be informed about this. The FSF recently
got itself onto United Way's distribution list.

I have spent long hours discussing these issues with IRS agents.
They look very much askance at non-profits that want to do the
same things as, and therefore compete with, for-profit companies.
And also at "charities" that do not target a specific group of
the needy.

There's a lot more to it than the statute. There are letter rulings
and additional rules. See any good book on forming a non-profit,
or search on the Web for the term "unrelated business income."
