I believe the bigger issue is whether or not X will support it.  I think
I heard it did but that information comes without a money back
guarantee. :-)

RELENG_4_5 is the best option.  Whilst -stable is incredibly stable it's
not perfect and all the docs say so.  Once you're a bit happier with
FreeBSD then move up to -stable, and eventually -current, but don't get
carried away just yet.

I'd actually advise not installing X as part of the distro.  I find it a
lot easier to install a basic system and then add things like that
through ports/packages.  If you do that then you'll also find it easier
to upgrade to X4.2 (which I'm pretty sure is in the ports collection
already.  Install 4.5, CVSUP your ports and then install X4.2)  Just
what I find easier.

I think most people take a couple of tries before they're happy :-)
