You have several options that may help:
1: As suggested, set arts to exit if idle (any arts aware application that 
needs it will start it up again when it's wanted)
2: Run realplayer through arts sound with "artsdsp realplay" - you'd probably 
want to alias that, and you'll likely experience some latency (slowness, 
skips, unsynched sound and video) with streaming media.
3: As suggested above, but, instead of trying to figure out how to teach 
realplayer to use a different dsp (I don't know that either, sorry), in KDE's 
control panel, in the sound server module, choose "use custom device" and try 
setting *it* to /dev/dsp0.<n>.  That will still leave you with xmms and 
realplayer to fight it out for the default dsp device, but, at least you have 
arts out of the way, and it's unlikely you'd want xmms and realplayer both 
running at the same time.

You could use 1 and 3 together (well, you could use all three together, but 
that's probably overkill.)
