Ahh i think i'm getting to the root of my problem then. my IR port doesnt get detected at all as far as i can tell. looking at pciconf -lv i get none1@pci0:9:0: class=0x0d0000 card=0x00011179 chip=0x0d011179 rev=0x00 hdr=0x00 vendor = 'Toshiba America Information Systems' device = 'FIR Port Type-DO' and from man pciconf the first column gives the device name, unit number, and selector. If there is no device configured in the kernel for the PCI device in ques- tion, the device name will be ``none''. so i guess its a dongle or nothing. Thanks anyway
