https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=234031 --- Comment #44 from Adam <adamrosas1972@gmail.com> --- My previous hypothesis was a dead end. freebsd-head correctly sets the sector size, implying bc_add() is called bypassing the '0x80 + unit' bits. interestingly setting the SCSI ID of my SCSI CDROM from 1 to 0 has changed the behavior of booting 12.1 from the zfree panic to BTX register dump. lsdev from the loader prompt on 10.4 shows 0x5 for the SCSI CDROM and 0x0 for the IDE CDROM, but when 10.4 is installed to a SCSI hard drive, boot stalls at BTX Loader.
