FreeBSD is a truly remarkable OS, and you'll certainly find both good and bads things about it. But at least, try using it for a while. It's a UNIX-like operating system, so you will feel rather comfortable with it, having used Linux until now. About your requirements now... > A server that i need: > -sendmail This is part of the base system. Which means you'll have Sendmail installed when the installation finishes, without the need to install anything 'extra'. > -php 4 > -apache > -postgreSQL > -samba These are available as packages (and ports). You'll find a lot of the packages precompiled in the FreeBSD installation CD-ROMs, but you can also use the tools provided by the system to download and build newer, more up to date versions, if that is what you wish to do. > -INTERBASE 6.0SS I don't know anything about this one, but from what you wrote about Conectiva Linux and what I've heard so far, it's a Linux application that you want to run. FreeBSD comes with a compatibility layer that allows you to seamlessly run many Linux applications. A lot of people have reported success with database management software like Oracle or INGRES running on FreeBSD with this Linux emulation layer. You can test running this with the Linux emulation of FreeBSD and see if it works out. I'd be suprised if it doesn't work though, since so many Linux applications run quite fine on FreeBSD too. > FreeBSD has all this packages? And many more. FreeBSD boasts a collection of more than 7,000 third-party packages, and you can usually get many more to compile out of the box on it, since it is one of the BSD UNIXes. Almost anything that compiles and builds cleanly on another UNIX machine from source, can also build and install fine on FreeBSD too.
