Hello

I have just installed FreeBSD 4.2 on my "Toshiba 4000cds" laptop =
computer. Since it does not have unlimited battery capacity I'm trying =
to figure out how to use the APM functionality in FreeBSD. I have used =
Amigas and Macs all my life so unix is a new world to me, and I'm not =
very good at this configuring and setting up things in textfiles (yet).

So this is the story:
I ran the "apm -z" and I got the message "apm:can't open /dev/apm: =
device not configured".
I ran "apmd -v -d" and I got the message "apmd:cannot open device file =
/dev/apmctl: Device not configured".
I looked in the /dev directory and there was a file there called "apm" =
and another one called "apmctl". Just in case i ran "./MAKEDEV apm" and =
"./MAKEDEV apmctl" in hope that that might do some magic, which it =
didn't.
I looked in the "rc.conf" file which says:
    apm_enable=3D"YES"
    apmd_enable=3D"YES"
    apmd_flags=3D"-d -v"
Then I scratched my head, and after that I looked in the configuration =
file for the GENERIC kernel, and it said that apm was enabled. I even =
tried to make my own configuration file and kernel and I actually made =
it work too (and thought to myself that I was getting pretty good at =
these unix things), but after booting the new kernel the problems was =
still there.
So now I don't know what to do.

And any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,
Arnfinn Aas Eielsen
