It would seem that I missed a bunch of configuration jargon in /etc/defaults/rc.conf when I ran mergemaster. (Along with /etc/mail/submit.cf and /etc/rc.sendmail) Everything seems to be working again. A big "Thank You!" to everyone who posted and emailed me! This list is much appreciated.
