ANDREAS.KLEMM.AK@bayer-ag.de writes: () I know this has been discussed several times, CAM won*%t make it into 2.2.x. () () But know I*%m bitten myself with this. () I want to build up a new high performance server. () Ideal would be an adaptec board called P2B-SL, which () contains an AIC 7890 amd an Intel 82558. I have three machines running 3.0-RELEASE with an ASUS P2B-S (the one with the SCSI chip onboard but unfortunately without Ethernet as we had difficulties to get them). Those three machines have a similar configuration: P2B-S with P-II/350, 256 meg RAM, 4,3 GB IBM DCAS UW disk. Two are desktop machines, the third is planned as a server machine. Unfortunately, mine is the only yet really used as our new employee starts to work in January and there was no time (and no need yet) to use the server heavily. Mine runs XFree86 3.3.3, KDE, XFMail, KNews, Netscape Communicator 4.07, a bunch of xterms, ssh, pgp, ghostscript, ghostview, Acrobat Reader and many more useful utilities. Currently, the programs running use about 160 meg RAM without any swap space in use. Maybe 256 meg is a somewhat large amount for a desktop machine :-) I have also tried a version of ApplixWare and StarOffice 3.0 and they worked fine. It run's flawlessly for 14 days no, the machine planned as a server is doing almost nothing (except a name server and some NFS I/O) and runs for 13 days now. The third machine is powered off, but has been running for a week fine. The base install was done from CD-ROM, the additional programs were installed by compiling them with a cvsup'ed current ports collection (I took most of the distfiles from the CD-ROM, of course). This took some time, but worked also without any problems. I can't say anything about constant heavy load, but the daily work runs fine on my machine. That what is called -CURRENT coming from the FreeBSD developers is usually significant more stable than what is called "release" from other well-known companies... () Is there any possibility, to get a 2.2.8 system running with these components, () or could we agree, that a 2.2.9 with CAM would be worth as last super stable () FreeBSD system in the 2.2.X line ? How about that, I decided to take a closer look at ftp.freebsd.org: >From /pub/FreeBSD/development/cam/README: "How do I install it?" Full release distribution sets for both 3.0-current and 2.2-stable systems are provided shortly after snapshots are released. The release distributions will be available at: ftp://ftp.FreeBSD.org/pub/FreeBSD/cam/ In the 2.2CAM-..-SNAP directory below there is also a boot.flp image, and a full distribution! :-) () Or does somebody provide a CAM boot floppy, to get a FreeBSD system () installed and are there CAM patches for 2.2.8 (-STABLE) to patch the kernel () after installation ??? Without thinking to long about it (I'm spending some time as holiday at home now :-) ), I would suggest the following way: - Get the CAM boot.flp image from a FreeBSD ftp mirror near to you - Bring the machine up, boot the floppy, and run a minimum (or custom) install via ftp. This may take some time, but works. (I did something similar with a 2.2.8 one or two weeks ago, and I let it work over night.) - Install a -current ports collection and build the applications you need. () I have to build the system in mid of January, that is the timeframe .... Enough available, I think :-) () Well, I could try to use a 3.0-STABLE system in the hope that the 3.0-STABLE () branch will be created at Jan 15th. But this doesn*%t bring me an installation () media ... Or I*%d have to install 3.0 and upgrade it ... () () Recommendations ? What would you do ? I chose a 3.0-RELEASE because I needed CAM, and I wanted to have those machines starting with a clean installation running ELF binaries. If you don't need that, I would start with 2.2CAM as described above. That may cause some heavy net load (installing from ftp), but for one single machine it will be the easiest way, I think.
