[-- Attachment #1 --] Hello Doug, This issue was caused by profiles that were commented out in /etc/make.conf. I have re-enabled most profiles and then mergemaster works fine, so i do not have this problem anymore. I have not been able to find the profile that really caused the problem. The mergemaster has been done with a fully synced up src tree.
