I suggest that synergy with industry is not only *not* destructive
to free software, but actually helps fund it.  I believe that
free software can be produced by commercial developers, who often
tend to be very practiced and skillful.  By taking profit motive
away by making enhancements necessarily encumbered, this takes
a degree of freedom away from those who have to feed their families,
as opposed to being fed by their families.
