I never had a problem with colour depth if I set the DefaultDepth to 24 (or 16 or whatever) but I used to take out the other entries to ensure it would only use that one. i.e. mine now looks like: Section "Screen" Identifier "Screen 1" Device "Matrox Mystique" Monitor "Gateway EV700" DefaultDepth 16 Subsection "Display" Depth 16 Modes "1024x768" ViewPort 0 0 EndSubsection EndSection -pcf.
